Phnom Penh
Cambodia's capital is often bypassed by visitors in favour of Siem Reap and its nearby temples, and whilst it isn't blessed with a huge number of things to see, it's a really nice, friendly city to relax in for a few days if you have the time.

The city's Royal Palace is one of the most stunning landmarks in the region, a citadel of golden-roofed palaces, pagodas and temples, while Wat Phnom temple is a great place to watch the sunset. For a more contemporary and disturbing view of Cambodian history, Tuol Sleng genocide museum is a harrowing but essential look at the lunacy of the Khmer Rouge regime.
At night, Phnom Penh comes alive with countless bars and restaurants, as well as a lively weekend night market.
Siem Reap
Cambodia's number one attraction is the temple complex at Angkor Wat, located just outside its second city Siem Reap. As well as Angkor Wat itself, visitors can experience the eerie statues of Angkor Thom and the incredible spectacle of Ta Phrom, an ancient temple which, over the centuries, has been taken over by nature. Hardcore temple devotees can also use Siem Reap as a base for exploring Banteay Srei and Beng Melea.
When you're all templed out, Siem Reap is well worth spending some time in by itself, a charming colonial riverside city with great shopping, eating and drinking - don't miss a night out on lively pub street with a visit to the excellent night market.

South Coast
Often overlooked in favour of the beaches of Thailand and southern Vietnam, Cambodia's south coast is one of the real hidden gems of Southeast Asia. The lively beach resort of Sihanoukville gets most of the tourists, but the sleep seaside town of Kep (and nearby Rabbit Island), the peaceful riverside town of Kampot, and the stunning Kirirom National Park make this a region well worth devoting some considerable time to.
The North
Improved road access means that Cambodia's north is now easier to visit than ever before. Visit the pretty colonial town of Kratie and try to spot rare Irrawaddy dolphins; visit Kampong Cham, Cambodia's third city and home to countless temples and rubber plantations; and explore the hilltribe villages of Ratanakiri province.
